Energy Audit

What is an Energy Audit?

A home energy audit is the systematic review of the interior and exterior of your home to determine energy use and the potential for savings and efficiency.  A certified home energy auditor will thoroughly examine your residence (approx 2 hours) using thermal energy technology.  Audit data will be collected, analyzed and presented to you in a report outlining specific actions that will lead to lower energy bills.

Energy audit benefits:

  • Dramatically reduce energy bills
  • Energy efficiency is the best energy investment
  • Efficiency measures typically payback in as little as 1-3 years
  • Tax credits will further reduce cost

The Home Energy Audit Process

Step 1 - Pre-audit Interview

The Xterior Plus energy auditor will run through a series of questions regarding any known problem areas of your home.  Be sure to highlight any future expansion plans you may have or specific goals you would like to achieve.

Step 2 - Exterior Inspection

Examine the outside of the home, including building orientation, affecting shade, and windbreak.

Examine all areas of potential air leakage: doors, windows, skylights, roofing, chimneys, attic, siding, and heating/air-conditioning units etc.

Step 3 - Interior Inspection

  •  Inspect thermostats, seals, glazing, weather stripping and locking mechanisms of windows and doors, and any floor anomalies.
  •  Inspect attic for seals and insulation around hatches, lighting fixtures, ventilation ducts, fans and ceiling.
  •  Inspect for age, basement wall, and air ducts for sealing and insulation.

Step 4 - Inspection Equipment used for Infrared Testing

Thermal Image Scan using a Forward Looking Infrared camera (FLIR)

A powerful tool, the FLIR or Forward Looking Infrared camera is a device that produces a thermal image of your home, pinpointing the areas that need more insulation or need to be sealed.  The thermal image of your home is a road map that enables energy audit contractors to successfully apply insulation to the most critical areas of your home and recommend windows, door or siding that needs to be replaced.

Step 5 - Energy Audit Report

Your home energy auditor will compile a comprehensive report detailing the areas in your residence that can be repaired, insulated and sealed to boost your energy efficiency.  The report will also outline recommend replacements.

Step 6 - Repairing, Replacing, Relaxing

With your energy report in hand you will find ways to improve the energy efficiency of your home. Xterior Plus is a licensed contractor in Virginia that can provide and install windows, doors, siding, roofing, gutters, insulation and more.

Once the repairs are done you will enjoy energy savings in the range of 10-40% depending on the condition of your house before the audit.  You can feel satisfaction in saving money, saving energy and saving the earth - all at the same time!
